Parental Notification: HIV/AIDS Prevention and Sex Education

and

Invitation to Preview Instructional Materials

 

State law requires that parents/guardians be notified of any school classes providing instruction in sex education and/or sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. In San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), Family Life Education is required for students in 6th grade. This 10 day program includes information on puberty, reproductive anatomy, sexual harassment, child abuse, refusal skills, sexually transmitted disease and HIV/AIDS. These lessons comply with the state education requirements and include:

 

1. Information on the nature of HIV and STDs, including methods of transmission.

2. Discussion of methods to reduce the risk of HIV and STD infection.

3. Development of refusal skills.

4. Discussion of societal views on HIV/AIDS including stereotypes and myths.

 

To provide you with the opportunity to preview instructional materials, a meeting will be held at Dana in the Library on February 6, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. A staff member from the SDUSD Intervention Services department will be available to discuss program objectives and answer questions. You may also review a copy of Senate Bill 71, pertaining to HIV/AIDS instruction and sex education on the District website
