Parent Information

Someone Like Me is an entertaining health education assembly for middle-school students. The play tells the story of four middle-school students. Their bodies are changing. Their friendships are changing. Sometimes they are sad, mad, frustrated and confused. What does it all mean?
The play touches on the following issues:
  • Sexual Health. Kaiser Permanente’s position is that middle school is not the right time to have sex. The play contains an abstinence message.
  • Gossip, rumors and electronic bullying (through email, text messages & blogging). Bullied students spend more time alone. They also are more likely to become depressed. Some even have thoughts of suicide.
  • Depression. One in five teens will experience depression. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens. It is important to understand what depression is and how to get help.

The goal of the program is to get students talking with teachers, parents, and trusted adults. The play also shows students ways to get help if they need it.
At the end of each performance, there is a question and answer session led by the trained actoreducators. The key message of the play is that help is always available. All students receive a wallet card with the number for the California Youth Crisis Hotline. This hotline is a free and anonymous resource.
