The mural is centrally located on campus and depicts an undersea theme, with sea life and a treasure chest, evoking thoughts of buried treasure and early mariners, like Juan Cabrillo. The mural was painted by Lisa Esmael and Dianne Abbott, a parent and grandparent of two boys at Cabrillo. All labor and materials for our mural were donated by parents and community members. The mural was painted using donated paints from San Diego based Frazee Paints as the Frazee family are alumnus of Cabrillo Elementary.

Cabrillo Elementary, established in 1906, is a Title I school with a diverse population. Currently, about 45% of our families are from military parents, many of whom are deployed. We are a K-4 school with an dynamic GATE Nurturing Program; 35% of our students are English Language Learners (ELD program) and 5% of our students receive Special Education Services. Cabrillo is a model example of inclusive education where special education students are taught in general education classrooms alongside their typical peers. Our student body breaks down ethnically with 51% Hispanic, 16% Black, 27% White and 6% Asian. At the present time 72% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Two years ago, a new principal came to Cabrillo with a vision; a top-notch school with involved parents, high achieving students and a functioning library, which he reopened last year. In the short time Principal Suarez has been at Cabrillo, extraordinary changes have taken place. There is an amazing energy here that cannot be ignored. Parent involvement has blossomed under his leadership. We went from almost no parent involvement to a current situation with a very active parent base at school, with the PTA and regular military personnel helping in the classroom 30 hours per week.
